At M&S Godalming, the Cheese Barge was designed to be more than simply a place to display product. It needed to become a focal point within the Foodhall — giving the cheese category greater presence while integrating seamlessly with the wider store environment.

M&S Godalming, The Cheese Barge

Turning refrigeration into retail theatre.

Working closely with the M&S design team and Aptos, the refrigeration supplier, Quagga helped develop the concept from design intent through to a fully resolved, manufacturable centrepiece.

Our role centred on the technical detail. We developed precision drawings, interfaces and construction detailing, carefully coordinating the bespoke elements around the refrigeration equipment while maintaining access, performance and practicality.

A key feature was the tile-clad exterior, which required careful setting out and detailing to achieve the quality and consistency demanded by such a prominent installation. Every junction, edge and interface was considered to ensure the finished piece felt deliberately designed rather than simply applied around a standard refrigerated display.

From technical design and material detailing through to manufacture, close collaboration across the project team ensured the creative vision could be delivered accurately on the shop floor.

The result is a bold centrepiece that gives the category its own identity and creates a moment of retail theatre within the Foodhall.‍ ‍

Detailed with precision. Built for retail. Designed to stand out.
